About This Tool
Add password protection to your PDF documents. Set a user password (required to open the file) and an owner password (required to change permissions). Choose which actions to allow: printing, copying text, and modifying. Everything is processed in your browser — your file and passwords are never sent anywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between user and owner passwords?
The user password is required to open and view the PDF. The owner password controls permissions like printing, copying, and editing. You can set both, or just one. Without a user password, anyone can open the file but permissions still apply.
What encryption does this use?
We use the encryption built into the PDF specification via the pdf-lib library. This provides standard PDF password protection that's recognized by all major PDF readers.
Can I choose what actions are allowed?
Yes. You can allow or restrict printing, copying text content, and modifying the document. These permission settings are enforced by PDF readers when the file is opened.
Is my password sent to a server?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your password and your PDF file never leave your device. This is the safest way to protect a PDF — no third party ever sees your credentials.
